This discussion paper or monograph, first published in 1994, has been reprinted in slightly edited form in Attuned Leadership (Penguin SA, 2011). The intention is to provoke constructive debates and forums around Ubuntu as a nation-building concept. Appearing as it did at the time of South Africa’s transition to democracy, the monograph sought to reposition African ideas of individualism as germane to the continent and its philosophy, while extending these beliefs into corporate life. The discussion remains pertinent today.
