Harbingers of the Future: A Call to Youth

An Address to the Orlando AOG (Assembly Of God) Education Awards Day Themed Celebrating Knowledge, Honouring Excellence, Inspiring Futures by Dr Reuel J. Khoza  I  28 June 2026

Opening Remarks on The Theme

Knowledge is key to progress and prosperity.
Celebration is recognition, motivation and inspiration.
Honouring excellence is essential sustenance for continuing outstanding performance: congratulate recipients defining moments.
Inspiring futures is the stuff that nourishes a sense of destiny and keeping a beckoning vision bright.

Thank you for inviting me to join you this morning, special thanks to Dr Freddy Mgiba and leaders of this hallowed Church.

My young friends, I stand before you not to recite a résumé, but to share a journey. A journey that has taken me through lecture halls and boardrooms, across the fields of farming and the corridors of corporations, into the worlds of music, writing, and academia. I have been a lecturer, a brand manager, a senior executive, a director and chairman of corporations. I have authored books, produced music, served as visiting professor and chancellor, and tilled the soil as a farmer.

But let me be clear: these titles are not medals to be polished. They are milestones that remind me of one truth - life rewards those who stay relevant to the future.

The Choice Before You

You, the youth of today, face a stark choice:

  • To become anachronisms, irrelevant to the future, clinging to yesterday’s tools and yesterday’s thinking.
  • Or to become harbingers of the future, mastering the currents of technology, innovation, and imagination.

The world will not wait for you. It will not slow down. It will not pause for nostalgia. It will demand that you stay current, that you embrace the cutting edge, that you learn to dance with change rather than resist it.

The Imperative of Innovation

When I began my journey, the tools of success were books, pens, and the discipline of study.

Today, the tools are artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and global networks. Tomorrow, they will be technologies we cannot yet name.

If you do not master them, they will master you. If you do not harness them, they will harness you. The future belongs not to those who fear innovation, but to those who bend it towards purpose, ethics, and humanity.

Your Call to Action

  • Stay current: Read, learn, and adapt. The world is a moving river; do not be left on the bank.
  • Master technology: Especially AI, which is not a threat but a tool. A tool that can amplify your creativity, sharpen your decision-making, and extend your reach.
  • Lead with values: Innovation without ethics is chaos. Anchor your future in integrity, inclusiveness, and stewardship.
  • Be bold: The future is not given, it is seized. Dare to imagine, dare to act, dare to lead.

Closing Benediction

My life has taught me that relevance is not about titles - it is about timeliness. It is about refusing to be yesterday’s story, and choosing instead to be tomorrow’s author.

So I say to you: Do not be an anachronism. Be a harbinger. Rise with courage, master the tools of tomorrow, and let your generation be remembered not for what it inherited, but for what it created.
