Tribute to Nkateko Patience Khoza

On this day, 25 May 2026, we pause to honour a life that has been nothing short of a benediction. Nkateko Patience Khoza - born prematurely on 25 May 1976 at Masana Hospital, whose very name, Nkateko, means Blessing, and whose second name, Patience, has endured as a testament to her character. Even Antoinette, later dropped, reminds us of the discernment with which she has shaped her identity, refusing to be defined by unwelcome associations.
From the very beginning, destiny whispered her promise. At the tender age of three, her creative spark was spotted by Grandaunt Katherine, who saw her sketching portraits on sand - an early sign of the artistry and vision that would later define her.
In primary school, she was focused and dedicated. At secondary school, she blossomed - her leadership recognised when she was elected hostel head girl. Her academic journey culminated in a B Com at Wits, majoring in Economics, Information Systems, and Accounting, followed by an MBA at WBS.
Her corporate career is a tapestry of excellence:
- At BMW, she sharpened her skills as an Information Systems Analyst.
- At EOS and Barlow Information Systems, she deepened her expertise.
- At Gauteng Provincial Contact Centre, she consulted with precision.
- At Deloitte, she rose to Associate Director, commanding respect and authority.
Yet Nkateko’s vision was never confined to corporate corridors. She co-founded Dzana Investments, a family investment company she runs with her father, and serves as director at Flanagan & Gerard and past director of Italtile Ltd. Alongside these, she oversees family ventures in fruit farming and hospitality - proof of her industrious spirit and entrepreneurial flair.
But beyond achievements, who is Nkateko?
- A bountiful blessing to the Khoza family, as Africa herself defines blessing.
- A source of inspiration to both the Khoza and Theledi clans.
- A unifier of kith and kin, in joy and in grief alike.
- Industrious to a fault, never shrinking from responsibility.
- Boundless in care, extending affection and support to all.
- An affectionate mother and bosom friend to her daughter Zoya.
- A guardian to her younger sister Munene, and a soul in loco parentis to my wife and me.
Nkateko embodies Ubuntu - the truth that “I am because we are.” She has lived it, breathed it, and gifted it to us all.
Today, as she turns 50, we celebrate not only her years but her impact. She is the golden thread weaving together family, enterprise, and community. She is proof that blessings are not abstract - they are flesh and blood, they are Nkateko.
May her next fifty years be as radiant as the first, and may her legacy continue to inspire generations yet unborn.
